Endodontic treatment or root canal treatment.

Root canal treatment is performed by the dentist to relieve pain that is caused by the nerve pulp of a tooth that would otherwise have to be extracted.

Usually the pulp becomes painful due to decay, trauma, or fractures of the tooth that extend to the nerve pulp causing the nerve to die and infection to occur. Sometimes the infection may present as just pain, or even swelling of the face.

Please Note: If you are having difficulty swallowing or breathing we strongly recommend that you attend the nearest emergency room.

The Process

Essentially, we numb up the tooth to make it comfortable to work on and then remove the remaining nerve from canals in the tooth. We then place a medication inside the tooth that is both an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic. This usually results in the tooth becoming quickly comfortable.

Root canal treatment is done in three stages

  1. removal of pain stage as described
  2. filing out the canals to create the right shape and again placing medication and
  3. placing a rubberized material called gutta percha to seal the canals

Later it is recommended that a crown or similar is placed over the tooth to protect it further
