Adelaide DentalCare prides itself on being a family dental practice, we have no age limits for our patients and are happy to see your newborn through to great great grand parents. We like to formally see children from 2 years of age, just to count teeth (there is usually 20 teeth at this age) and get them to know the surgeries and staff and have a ride in the dental chair. We try to make it comfortable, non threatening, and encourage them to have fun and ask questions. Often we get the best results from parents or siblings having their checkup first so that the younger child sees what to expect.

By the time they need might something done, we hope that they will know and trust us to treat them in the familiar dental chair.

About Children’s Teeth

If there is attachment issues when breast feeding – a tongue tie may be the issue. Try to reduce use of the dummy as it does change the shape of your child’s palate and teeth. Try to keep sugar to a minimum – ensure fruit is followed by some water to wash sugar away. The overnight bottle should only be water in it (breast milk and formula has just enough sugar for decay to start if used overnight).

Brushing

0-2 years no toothpaste because children cant spit

2-6 years junior fluoridated toothpaste – spit no rinse

6 years onwards adult toothpaste spit no rinse

Sometimes children benefit from oral desensitizing – rub a facecloth around lips/ vibrating toothbrush to chew/suck when they continually refuse a brush
on average, adult teeth start to appear at 6 years with the first adult molar appearing followed at 6 ½ years lower then upper front teeth. OTHER adult teeth will fill in over the next few years till their 12 yr old second molars appear and maybe their wisdom teeth may show between 16-20 years of age Mouthguards for all contact sports are a must – we can custom-make them to allow for some growth as children have their adult teeth start to erupt/ develop If a tooth is knocked out – find the tooth. If you can replant it (clean it only with saliva or milk) If you cant replant it -Store it in milk/ or collected saliva (doesn’t matter if it has blood in it) normal saline. Don’t let it dry out or clean it Get to a dentist as soon as possible At Adelaide Dental Care we have great relationships with Paedodontists – specialist paediatric dentists who may be required for the treatment of very young or complex children under general anaesthetic in hospital
